BANKS is a contemporary surf & lifestyle label, which blends style & function into modern pieces with a sustainable approach to design and development. The Byron Bay-based label incorporates environmentally friendly materials into each of the garments, with everything from the shirts to the swing tags and packaging made from recycled materials.
The new BANKS summer collection spans from boardies and zip jacket wetsuits to tees, woven shirts and hats. BANKS summer tees are (and always have been) made from organic cotton in a series of classic colours, boardies are designed for movement and the modern styling & understated function is perfect for all day surfing and everyday journeys, while the woven shirt showcases a corduroy vintage look.

BANKS was created by surf industry veterans and the founders include Australian-based Global Brand Director Tim Cochran (former director of product for Hurley in Australasia), Japanese-based CEO Masa Shibahara (instrumental in landing Banks in Ron Herman and Barneys New York in Japan), and Costa Mesa, CA-based CFO Motoo Noda who comes from a law background. Rounding out the team is McCabe (formerly of The Critical Slide Society) who is now based out of Costa Mesa, and Australia-based Global Art Director Jay Quirk.
Masa then brought in his friend, (and former professional surfer) Brad Gerlach, which McCabe says upped the ante. “The addition of Brad to the team really helped us get cut through especially in the U.S. Market with so much of a brand’s success being built on long standing relationships,” McCabe said.
BANKS Comrade Jared Mell is a one of the most stylish longboarders in the world. Adding to his surfing talents Jared is shaping surfboards, working the decks djing and collaborating with filmmakers like Thomas Campbell. Jared is a nomad traveling around the Californian coast in his van, through the coastline of Indonesia and beyond.
BANKS Comrade Jason ‘Salsa’ Salisbury is an Australian surfer that spends his time between his native country and Bali. When he’s not leading meditation classes, he can be found navigating warm water barrels in the most stylish nature.
BANKS Comrade Tom Morat hails from Noosa on the east coast of Australia. He can be found on the long right hand point breaks of the area or chasing the elusive cyclone swells. When not at school or in the warm waters, Tom can be found in Thomas Bexon’s shaping bay crafting all manner of modern ocean fairing vessels.
BANKS Comrade Kahana Kalama is a Hawaiian-bred surfer now living in San Diego. He can be spotted around the Blacks beach area, most likely on an odd McCallum shape, with nothing but a smile on his face. When he’s not in the water he’s running Aloha Beach Club, a beautiful shop in North Park, Ca. helping to bring some conscious design to an up-and-coming borough.
